I’m Missing an Arm, She’s Missing Her Heart

Welcome to “Comparing and Contrasting the Sexes – Episode I”. In this installment I’ll be examining the importance we place on the significant other in terms of physical relation.

I recently said of Sarah that in her absence I was missing my right arm. She deftly replied that she was missing her heart. These quotes I’m sure a driving you readers batty with 7th grade level cuteness and exclamations of “awwwwww…” etc. etc. But I particularly thought that this was an interesting observation of our perceptions of each other.

First, I think Sarah is my arm. I’m a guy. I think in terms of here, now, push, pull, and occasionally higher functions like love. Honestly, normally I wouldn’t have even compared Sarah to my arm, because I’m that practical. But I suppose if I were going to be as practical as possible while winning the fair maiden admiration, she should be my arm. My arm is important to me as a man. It is my ability to do work and make change. In many ways, my arm and the works of my arm define me.

On the other hand, Sarah thinks I’m her heart. When I first read her reply, I thought to myself, “oh crap, I should have thought of that first… to impress her even more.” My next thought was, “that’s ok, I can blog about it to impress her more.” I can’t say I totally understand everything that comes out of her Woman Bullhorn, but if I was to put her statement in a similar context as mine, it tells me a lot about her and how she relates to the world (also, I get to flatter myself).

If I’m her heart as she is my arm, then the best part of her is her heart. She defines the wellbeing of her life by the wellbeing of her heart. I suspect a large part of that includes the condition of the relationship as well. And she cares about me and who I am and our relationship together because it is central to how she operates at a daily level.

What’s so great about this is seeing just how similarly we differentiate how we communicate. At least I think so.
